Osmotic Laxatives

LACTULOSE
  • Action to be taken: No action needed
  • Rationale:Less than 3% of laculose is absorbed . Absorbed lactulose is excreted unchanged in the urine. Unabsorbed lactulose is metabolized by colonic bacteria to lactic, acetic, and formic acids.

POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL
  • Action to be taken: No action needed
  • Rationale: Results from pharmacokinetic studies show that polyethylene glycol is poorly absorbed and primarily eliminated in the feces
